The photographs were found in the course of a general search for nitrate materials in the collections.

Henri Marc Ami was a paleontologist with the Geological Survey of Canada during much of the time during which the photographs in this series were taken.

Custodial history
The Topley Collection was purchased from the Topley family in 1936. When, or why, these photographs were placed at the Topley studio is unknown.

Related materials
Acc. No. 1982-129 contains several hundred lantern slides by Ami from the same period. Prints of some Ami negatives are found in Geological Survey collection, acc. no. 1970-88; prints of the Ottawa/Hull fire of 1900 are found in Bronson Family collection, acc. no. 1980-33.
