Biography / Administrative history
Prior to the formation of Canada, each province had an "inspector general" who handled financial affairs. Under the new federal government, this responsibility was allocated to a "Minister of Finance" (32-33 Vict., 22 june 1869). The Department of Finance reports to the Minister through its Deputy Minister, assisted by two Associate Deputy Ministers and a Senior Assistant Deputy Minister. In addition to the role as head of the Department of Finance, the Minister of Finance reports to Parliament on the activities of a number of other agencies, such as the Bank of Canada, the Department of Insurance, the Auditor General, the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation. The Minister of Finance also has charge of the management and direction of the Consolidated Revenue Fund of Canada, and the supervision, control and direction of all matters relating to the financial affairs of Canada not by law assigned to any other minister.
