The Departmental Solicitor within the Legal Branch provided legal advice and services to the Department of Finance. Policy recommendations formulated in the department were generally referred to the solicitor to verify their legality. Robert B. Viets was the departmental solicitor for much of the period covered in this series. The Law Branch is the current successor to the office of the Legal Branch and the office of the Departmental Solicitor. The Law Branch manages and administers all legal services to the Department of Finance and OSFI. It also manages and administers the Access to Information and Privacy Unit and the Department's legislative program. All lawyers in the branch are officers of the Department of Justice. It is composed of three divisions and one unit. RG19 General Inventory and the Department of Finance web-site
