Biography / Administrative history

The International Finance and Development Division advises on foreign exchange policy, deals with matters relating to the International Monetary Fund, and participates in the work of the Group of Ten. The division is composed of two sections: the Balance of Payments Section and the International Organizations section. The Balance of Payments Section is responsible for the analysis of Canada's trade and financial transactions with foreign countries. Its major functions include analysis of monetary policy and its interaction with fiscal policy; Canadian and United States financial markets; analysis of the exchange rate and Management of the Exchange Fund Account. It acts as the chief repository of Canada's official international reserves. The section also carries out a variety of studies on related areas such as the international aspects of the world energy situation and the implications of Canada's commercial and foreign investment policies for the balance of payments structure. The International Organizations section studies the international monetary system and its evolution, and advises on Canadian policy in this matter. RG19 General Inventory
