Scope and content
Series consists of records related to the work of the commission and boards of claims for War of 1812 Losses. These records include proceedings, letterbooks, vouchers for supplementary payments. The type of claims investigated included claims for damage done by his Majesty's troops, damage done by Indians, damage done by the enemy, and damage sustained in transporting troops, goods, etc. These records have become a part of the Department of Finance fonds because of the department's role as a central agency whose terms of reference extend to financial matters across all government activities. One architectural drawing includes a description of the Charles Field house describing the building materials and dimensions, the index to the layout of the house that was used as a local tavern and a hand written note to certify that "the whole of this House is of the Dimensions and materials expressed in the Heading of this plan", dated August 18, 1806 and signed by Geo Lowes. Five architectural drawing of the house owned by the Hon. William Dickson accompanied Dickson's claim to the Board of Claims for War of 1812 losses.

Biography / Administrative history
During the War of 1812 and immediately after it, local military boards ruled on claims submitted for losses sustained as a result of the war. In 1815, Lieutenant Governor General Gore appointed for this purpose a commission which submitted a report in 1816; but no claims were paid. A new commission was appointed in 1823 under provincial statute (4 Geo. IV; Chap. 4). 25% of the amounts paid on claims approved by the new commission came from imperial funds. RG19 General Inventory
