Biography / Administrative history
The Halifax Fishery Commission was appointed in 1877 under Articles 22 and 23 of the Treaty of Washington to determine the amount of compensation to be paid by the U.S. in return for fishing privileges in the Atlantic awarded by article 18. Sir A.T. Galt was then the British representative. When the treaty was later denounced by the United States, negotiations had to be resumed and a new treaty was signed in 1888. RG19 General Inventory
