Scope and content

Series consists of correspondence, various returns, pay lists, lists of shareholders, contractor's ledgers, bonds and powers of attorney documenting the controversy and the history of the Welland Canal company. Founded in 1824, the Welland Canal Company was to build the canal with the assurance that the government would let them control it for at least 30 years after its completion; the decision of the house of Assembly to buy it back in 1837 brought about a controversy. These records have become a part of the Department of Finance fonds because of the department's role as a central agency whose terms of reference extend to financial matters across all government activities.
