Scope and content

Sub-sub-series consists of census records for New Brunswick for 1851 and 1861. The censuses for 1851 (Volumes 260-270, Microfilm Reels C-994 to C-998) and 1861 (Volumes 608-624, Microfilm Reels C-999 to C-1007) indicate the individuals, by name, in each house, as well as their age, sex, relationship, race, occupation, date of entry to the colony, etc. A second schedule was also compiled for each household detailing information related to inhabited houses, houses being built, births, deaths, schools, land, crops collected, etc.

Finding aid 31-1, a published catalogue entitled Catalogue of Census Returns on Microfilm, 1666-1891 provides an alphabetical listing by place name within each province. A copy of this is available in the reading room. 31-1 90 (Paper)

Finding aid 31-5 is a typed shelf-list to the microfilm for the census of New Brunswick, 1851 and 1861. The list indicates the order of the census returns on the microfilm reel as well as any missing schedules. 31-5 (Paper)

Researchers should also consult related records for New Brunswick census returns in the custody of the Private Archives Division of the Library and Archives Canada. Census returns for 1851 are found in reels M-557 and M-5221. Census returns for 1861 are found in reels M-556 to M-559 and M-5221. These microfilms are inventoried in MG 9. The original records for all microfilm reels prefixed with an "M" do not exist at the Library and Archives Canada but rather in other institutions.
