Scope and content

The photographs are a portfolio entitled "Shaping the New Forest". This portfolio is based on work undertaken by the photographer Lorraine Gilbert during her work as a tree planter in British Columbia during the period 1988 - 1994, and is divided into two sections. The first, "The Landscapes", is composed of 22 prints taken in the vicinity of Tofino, Pemberton, Gold River, Bella Coola, Invermere, Princeton, Moh Creek, and Carmanah Valley and is devoted primarily to the landscape left after clear-cut logging, the work of the tree planters, and workers' camps. The second, "The Portraits", is composed of 30 prints of individuals or small groups of planters at work, their camp life and and the camp facilities, and posed "studio" portraits of some planters.
