This accession contains two types of material, Chinese C.I. 44 forms and the corresponding index cards. They are both on micofilm. The C.I. 44 forms are a one page form that document each immigrant that was registered under Section 18 of the Immigration Act. In addition to including a photograph of the immigrant, each form contains information such as: the name, alias, address, occupation, age, marital status, name of husband/wife and his/her address in Canada, the names and addresses of children in Canada, birthplace, port of entry, ship, date of arrival, amount paid for the head tax, C.I. 5 number, height, facial and physical features. There is also an area assigned for remarks in case the Department has specific comments to make about the individual. These forms are organized chronologically by date of registration.

The C.I. 44 index cards are used to access the forms. they are organized alphabetically by surname and are available on microfilm. Each index card contains information such as: the person's name, age, date of registration, as well as the C.I. 44 number. Some of the cards also include the C.I. 36, C.I. 28 and C.I. 5 numbers, as well as the case file number for the individual. The information from these index cards such as the registration date and the C.I. 44 number provide sufficient information to access the C.I. 44 forms that are on microfilm.

Custodial history

These reels are in two groups, the C.I. 44 forms (T-16164 to T-16184) and the Index Cards (T-16156 to T-16163). They need to be verified by the Access Section to see if they can be opened to the public. If so, reference copies need to be made.
