Biography / Administrative history

The Office of Deputy Superintendent General was created in 1862, thus providing the Indian administration with a permanent head (with the status of a deputy minister). William Spragge was appointed to the position by Order in Council of 17 March 1862. His successors included L. Vankoughnet and Hayter Reed, appointed in 1874 and 1893 respectively. James A. Smart, Deputy Minister of the Interior, was appointed Deputy Superintendent in 1897 and undertook a general reorganization of the Department of Indian Affairs. Francis Pedley was appointed Deputy Superintendent of Indian Affairs in 1902, ending the system whereby the Deputy of the Interior held that post. Pedley was succeeded by D.C. Scott and Dr. H.W. McGill, appointed in 1913 and 1932 respectively. The position, as such, disappeared in 1936 with the reduction of the Department of Indian Affairs to Branch status within the Department of Mines and Resources. At that time the permanent head took on the title of Director, Indian Affairs Branch. RG10 General Inventory
