Biography / Administrative history

The Manitoba Superintendency was created ca. 12 May 1876 and was responsible for the Bands in the regions relating to Treaty 1, 2, 3 and 5. These bands included the following: Assiniboine (1882-1885); Clandeboye (1878-1896); Portage la Prairie (1878-1896); Lake Manitoba (1878-1896); Assabaskasing (1879-1896); Coutcheeching (1879-1896); Savanne (1882-1896); Norway House (1879-1896); and The Pas (1884-1896). Related materials
Many of the early records in the Black (Western) Series sub-series (R216-245-8-E, MIKAN 157500, RG10-B-3-b) were created by the Manitoba Superintendency. Such files were transferred to Department of Indian Affairs headquarters c.1910 upon closure of the western office and were integrated into the headquarters Black Series filing system.
