Scope and content

Album compiled by Major T.J. Grant as an expression of his experiences and impressions of B.N.A. The Major was District Inspector of Musketry for B.N.A. The album represents a lavish example of Victorian Canadian photography. Subjects include portraits and views of Halifax, N.S.; Quebec, Ontario, and Bermuda associated with Grant's colonial career that spanned the years 1865 to 1870. The themes of the photographs reflect Grant's military interests, his respect for the elements of nature, as captured by A. Henderson's landscape photographs, the social life of the fashionable, skating, sleighing and tobogganing, snowshoeing and hunting in the wilderness as recreated by Notman's unique studio tableaux. The album also contains a short series on Bermuda.
