Series consists of the letter registers and indexes that were produced in the Northern Superintendency, Division 1, and the Manitowaning Agency to register incoming correspondence. The registers and indexes in Volumes 12870-12891 were part of the recording system instituted in 1884, in the Northern Superintendency, Division 1, and continued by the Manitowaning Agency. As letters were received in the Manitowaning office they were allocated a unique letter number, and the following other information was recorded: the author and place of origin; the subject; the "Red Series" file numbers of letters from headquarters was noted; the date on the letter and its date of reception; and finally the number under which the letter would be filed, or its file number. (For a more detailed explanation of the last part of this process see the registry files sub-sub-series, RG10-C-V-26-e-1). Periodically, the letter registers would be indexed alphabetically, utilizing nominal or subject classifications. The letter number and the file number was also noted. The index could be used by its creators to locate the letter summaries in the registers (using the letter number), or locate the actual letters (via the file number, and then the letter number). After 1893-1896 (Vol. 12877) indexes were no longer created. The three letter registers of Volumes 12892-12894, generally follow the same format as those mentioned above, but unlike those books they cannot be connected to a specific filing system, or series of letterbooks. From internal evidence they appear to have been used from 1894-1913, by the Manitowaning Agency to record the receipt of routine correspondence concerning financial matters. The remaining register (Volume 12895) deals, largely, with "Red Series" headquarters's correspondence coming into the Manitoulin office, 1867-1896.

Biography / Administrative history
In 1898, the Northern Superintendency, Division 1 was dismantled and the Indian Land offices were abolished. A Manitowaning Agency was created 1 November 1898 (o/c 2464) to administer the remaining bands of the abolished Northern Superintendency, Division 1. On 23 June 1938 (o/c 1436-23), the Gore Bay and Manitowaning Indian agencies were amalgamated to create the Manitoulin Island Agency. This agency became the Manitoulin Island District Office in 1972.
