Scope and content
This series consists of approximately 657 photographs documenting activities of artist Franz Johnston including his time as both a Canadian war artist and member of the Group of Seven. Many of the photographs document military flying training activity, a subject painted by Johnston during his service as a Canadian war artist, 1917-1918. Many of the other photographs document landscapes in northern Canada, a subject frequently painted by Johnston during the 1920 (a period when he was a member of the Group of Seven) and the 1930s. Many of the photographs are by Johnston himself, who used them as visual aids in completing his paintings.
