Scope and content
Sub-series consists of a nominal index created by Immigration officials. This index covers arrivals by sea and by land from 1925 to 1951. The index is available only on microfilm, one reel for each letter of the alphabet. Each reel contains a series of 25 indexes, arranged by years in the following sequence: 1951 (Ocean and Border arrivals), Ocean arrivals: 1949-1950, 1948, 1947, 1944-1946, 1939-1943, 1933-1938, 1930-1932, 1929, 1927-1928, Border entries: 1949-1950, 1948, 1946-1947, 1942-1945, 1939-1941, 1936-1938, 1933-1935, 1932, 1931, 1930, 1929, 1928, 1927, 1925-1926. Each index entry contains the following details: surname, given name(s), age, sex, nationality, port of arrival (for ocean arrivals only), date of arrival, volume, page, line number. The year, volume, page and line numbers are used to locate an individual's record of entry in the actual passenger lists or border entry lists.

Copyright belongs to the Crown. Since the personal information found in the records dating from 1 January 1936 is subject to access restrictions under the Privacy Act, the index is not open to the public. Staff of the National Archives' Genealogy Unit, Reference and Researcher Services Division, will consult the index on behalf of researchers for the 1925 to 1935 period only.
