Scope and content
Sub-sub-series consists of monthly lists or charts compiled by the local Controllers of Chinese Immigration at Victoria of (a) person(s) readmitted to Canada under valid C.I.9 and C.I.9A certificates, or (b) native-born persons not travelling under certificate but whose readmittance was reported. The readmissions cover the period October 1911 to December 1953. Also listed are (c) persons who stayed out of Canada beyond the legal time limit, whose C.I.9 and C.I.9A certificates were therefore cancelled, in the period May 1922 to December 1953. The actual departure dates represented in these records go back to at least 1910. The lists were forwarded to Ottawa in letter or chart form. They appear originally to have been placed on headquarters (First Central Registry) file 830533-VICTORIA, but were separated from the file's other contents and rearranged here in chronological order in 32 file parts. The readmission lists are in parts 1-31 and the cancellation lists are at the end in part 32. No comparable records have been transferred for the port of Vancouver. Most of the persons readmitted returned to Canada through Victoria, but other land, sea and air ports in British Columbia (and a few elsewhere in Canada) are also represented. Each monthly re-admission list gives the names of persons re-admitted, number of their C.I.9/9A certificate, numbers of I.D. certificates surrendered and returned, and sometimes the number of a case file. The cancellation lists (1922-1953) in file part 32 cover departures through Victoria between about 1918 and 1953. There are no lists for cancellations in February to May 1924, January 1932 to December 1933, or January 1941 to December 1946. Each monthly list gives the individual's name, number of cancelled C.I.9/9A certificate, numbers of surrendered I.D. certificates returned to Ottawa for cancellation, and sometimes the number of a case file.
