Scope and content

Sub-series consists of a small selection of assisted passage case files created under the AP series, one of two concurrent systems of passage grant administration. This series was established some time in the 1960's. It is believed that the "AP" series ran concurrently with the "W" series, and that both were superseded in about 1977 by the TL (Transportation Loan) series. The AP series of case files document the granting and repayment of loans to individual immigrants for the cost of travel to Canada, and travel and settlement expenses immediately upon arrival. These files generally contain routine application forms, loan agreements, and accounting records documenting the repayment (or failure to repay, pursuit, and write-off) of the loan. They occasionally also contain related correspondence such as letters or reports describing the immigrant's early experiences in and adjustment to Canada. The files are numbered in a non-sequential system probably derived from the number assigned to the loan agreement document by the Department. Volume 715 contains two AP files, transferred to the National Archives in 1979 with other case records selected for their special historical interest. They relate to a French immigrant's plan to establish a French colony in Alberta, and adjustment problems suffered by a British travel journalist on a brief sojourn in Canada.
