Scope and content

Sub-series consists of photographs of Alaska, documenting the administration of public lands in close proximity to British Columbia and the Yukon. The photographic sub-series was originally compiled from federal sources including various sub-agencies and survey branches of the Department of the Interior, predominantly the Yukon and North West Territories Branch. Some photographs may have been acquired from private sources and independent photographers from the United States and Canada. The sub-series is organized alpha-numerically as follows. AL-8 series consists of photographs documenting scenery in Alaska. Photos of Russel Glacier, the Lynn Canal on the coast of Alaska, and the North East point of Eastcape, Siberia. No photographers are indicated. AL-12 series consists of photographs documenting transportation operations, networks and services between Alaska and Canada. Photos of coastal steamer ships near Skagway, Alaska. No sources or photographers are indicated.

Custodial history
Sub-series of photographs from photo accession 1936-271 previously acquired and managed by one branch of the Department of the Interior, the Natural Resources Intelligence Service ca. 1917-1929. The branch operated as a central agency with the purpose of classifying and disseminating documentation concerning Canada's natural resources and industry development. This organization was renamed the National Development Bureau in 1930, continuing to maintain and update a comprehensive photograph and lantern slide library containing views of Canada's geography, development and tourism. Upon the closure of the Department of the Interior in 1933, the Development Bureau's collections were transferred to other government agencies including the Department of Mines and Resources, Department of Trade and Commerce and the Tourist Board. This sub-series of photographs was transferred to the National Archives in 1936. There are no negatives, duplicates, interpositives or loose prints in the Alaska sub-series.
