Scope and content

Sub-series consists of photographs of the United States documenting the administration of public lands and resource development in close proximity to Canada. The photographic sub-series was originally compiled from federal sources including various sub-agencies and survey branches of the Department of the Interior. Some photographs may have been originally acquired from private sources and independent photographers from Canada and the United States. Photos are organized alpha-numerically as follows. US-8 series consists of one photograph of a scenic view taken at Olga, Orcas Island, U.S.A. No source or photographer is indicated. US-12 series consists of photographs documenting cross boarder transportation networks. Photos of buffalo being loaded on to trains. Sources include the Canadian National Parks Branch of the Department of the Interior. No photographers are indicated. US-15 series consists of one photograph of St. John the Divine Cathedral in New York City. No source or photographer is indicated. US-16 series consists of photographs documenting American historic sites and monuments. Includes photos of the Sea Gull monument erected by Mormon pioneers in Utah, 1913. No sources or photographers are indicated. US-23 series consists of one aeriel photograph of the locks at Sault St. Marie, Michigan. Photo taken by the Royal Canadian Air Force in collaboration with the Surveys Branch of the Department of the Interior.

Textual references to photography and departmental operations in the United States are both noted in the Department of the Interior annual reports ca. 1905-1931.

Custodial history

Sub-series of photographs from photo accession 1936-271 previously acquired and managed by one branch of the Department of the Interior, the Natural Resources Intelligence Branch ca. 1917-1922. In 1922 the name was changed to the Natural Resources Intelligence Service. The branch operated as a central agency with the purpose of classifying and disseminating documentation concerning Canada's natural resources and industry development. This organization was renamed the National Development Bureau in 1929, continuing to maintain and update a comprehensive photograph and lantern slide library containing views of Canada's geography, development and tourism. Upon the closure of the National Development Bureau in 1933, the collections were transferred to other agencies operating within the Department in addition to external federal agencies including the Department of Mines and Resources, Department of Trade and Commerce and the Tourism Board. This sub-series of photographs was transferred to the National Archives in 1936.
