Scope and content

The series consists of thirty two (32) black and white archivally processed portrait photographs, taken during the period 1988-1990, by David Neel Jr., British Columbia native Indian artist (b.1960). These photographs were selected from a series of fifty five (55) portrait images entitled "Our Chiefs and Elders", first exhibited in 1990, which document the leaders of British Columbia's native Indian communities. The portfolio depicts men and women in either traditional / ceremonial regalia or non-native everyday dress or both. The native leaders photographed for this series include: Catherine Adams (traditional regalia); Agnes Alfred (traditional regalia); Chief Alvin Alfred (traditional regalia); Chief Alvin Alfred with Ethel Alfred (everyday dress); Chief Councillor Harry Assu (traditional regalia); Grace Azak (everyday dress); Chief Clarence Dempsey Collinson (traditional regalia & everyday dress); Chief Councillor Ruby Dunstan (everyday dress); Chief Councillor Leonard George (everyday dress); Mary Hayes (everyday dress); Chief Councillor Alfred Hunt (traditional regalia); Chief Bill Hunt (traditional regalia); Gabriel Jack (everyday dress); Mary Jackson (everyday dress); Chief Joe Mathias (everyday dress); Chief Edwin Newman (traditional regalia); [Bill (William) Reid, artist]; Chief Rod Robinson (traditional regalia); Grand Chief James Scotchman (traditional regalia); Lily Speck (traditional regalia); Hazel Stevens (everyday dress); Chief Charlie Swanson (traditional regalia, clerical dress & everyday dress); Chief Councillor Saul Terry (everyday dress); Chief James Wallas (traditional regalia); Lucy Williams (everyday dress); Chief Allen Wilson (traditional regalia); Chief Ernest Yeltatzie (traditional regalia); and Chief Nathan Young (traditional regalia).
