Scope and content

The series consists of five (5) original prints (serigraphs) published during the period 1990-1994, by David Neel Jr., British Columbia native Indian artist (b. 1960). Four of these prints represent the artists visual impressions of certain important contemporary issues/events significantly affecting the First Nations peoples at the time that they were created. The fifth print contains a symbolic representation of the artist's family and ancestors in the form of a genealogical mosaic using traditional Kwagiutl art forms. The issues and/or events represented on the first category of print include: "Just Say No" - commemorating Elijah Harper's role in the Meech Lake negotiations in June 1990; "Life on the 18th Hole" - commemorating the stand-off at Oka, Quebec, in August 1990; "Trial of Tears" - depicting Native Indian Elder Mary Jackson upon hearing the outcome of the Gitskan / Wet'suet'en land-claim trial, 8 March 1991; "Out of Sight / Out of Mind" - documenting the struggles of the Innu people with the issues of low-level military test flights in the North and the social problems of the Davis Inlet community, 1994; The remaining print: "Kwagiutl Family Portrait", is representative of the genealogical make-up of the artist's family including his artistic lineage traced back through several generations.
