Biography / Administrative history
The 1st Canadian Division had its origins in the 1st contingent of twenty-five thousand men who volunteered for service overseas shortly after the British declaration of war in August 1914. Volunteers gathered at a hastily-erected camp at Valcartier, Québec, prior to being despatched overseas. The 1st Contingent arrived in England in October 1914 and spent the winter training on Salisbury Plain. The 1st Canadian Division was formed from units of the first contingent in January 1915, and was fighting in France the following month. When the Canadian Corps was formed in September 1915 it included the 1st Canadian Division. The 1st Canadian Division was composed of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Canadian Infantry Brigades and the 1st Divisional Artillery and was commanded successively by Lieutenant-General E.A. Alderson (29 September 1914 to 12 September 1915), Major-General A.W. Currie (13 September 1915 to 8 June 1917) and Major-General Sir A.C. Macdonell (9 June 1917 to 22 May 1919).
