Biography / Administrative history

The 27th Canadian Infantry Battalion was organized in October 1914 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel I.R. Snider under authorization published in General Order 36 of 15 March 1915. The battalion mobilized at Winnipeg and recruited in Brandon, Portage La Prairie, Rainy River, Kenora and Winnipeg.

The battalion embarked at Quebec 17 May 1915 aboard CARPATHIA, disembarking in England on 28 May 1915. Its strength was 33 officers and 1039 other ranks. The battalion arrived in France on 17 September 1915, becoming part of the 2nd Canadian Division, 6th Canadian Infantry Brigade. It was later reinforced by the 11th Canadian Reserve Battalion. The battalion returned to England on 13 April 1919, disembarked in Canada on 22 May 1919, was demobilized on 26 May 1919, and was disbanded by General Order 149 of 15 September 1920.

The battalion supported a brass band, had a fox as mascot, and published "Trench Echo", in Christmas 1915, Easter 1916, and Christmas 1917. The battalion colours were turned over to The Manitoba Regiment.

The 27th Canadian Infantry Battalion was perpetuated by The Manitoba Regiment.
