Biography / Administrative history

The 52nd Canadian Infantry Battalion was organized in March 1915 under the command of Lt. Col. A.W. Hay, under authorization published in General Order 86 of 1 July 1915. It was mobilized at Port Arthur and recruited in Port Arthur, Kenora, Fort Francis, Fort William and Dryden.

Initial drafts consisting of a total of 5 officers and 250 other ranks were sent to England on 17 June and 4 September 1915. The battalion itself embarked at Saint John on 23 November 1915 aboard CALIFORNIA, disembarking in England on 2 December 1915. Its strength was 40 officers and 1032 other ranks. The battalion arrived in France on 21 February 1916, becoming part of the 3rd Canadian Division, 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade. It was later reinforced by the 18th Canadian Reserve Battalion. The battalion returned to England on 11 February 1919, disembarked in Canada on 24 March 1919, was demobilized on 30 March 1919, and was disbanded by General Order 149 of 15 September 1920.

The regimental colour was donated by the Princess Beatrice Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE), Port Arthur. The Kings' colour was donated by the Busy Bee Club, Fort William and was presented by Sir Arthur Currie at Tournai on 3 February 1919. It was later deposited in St. John's Church, Port Arthur. The battalion supported a brass band.

The 52nd Canadian Infantry Battalion was perpetuated by The Lake Superior Regiment.
