The 58th Canadian Infantry Battalion was organized in May 1915 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel H.A. Genet, under authorization published in General Order 103a of 15 August 1915. The battalion mobilized at Niagara-on-the Lake and recruited in Toronto, Aurora, Hamilton, St. Catharines, Milton, Parry Sound, Owen Sound, Whitby, Brampton, Cayuga, Brantford, Simcoe, Niagara Falls and Dundas.
An initial draft of 5 officers and 248 other ranks was sent to England on 17 August 1915. The battalion itself embarked at Halifax on 22 November 1915 aboard SAXONIA, disembarking in England on 30 November 1915. Its strength was 40 officers and 1091 other ranks. The battalion arrived in France on 20 February 1916, becoming part of the 3rd Canadian Division, 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade. It was later reinforced by the 8th Canadian Reserve Battalion. The battalion returned to England on 11 February 1919, disembarked in Canada on 20 March 1919, was demobilized on 23 March 1919, and was disbanded by General Order 149 of 15 September 1920.
The battalion colours were presented in March 1919 while at Bramshott. The battalion supported a brass band.
The 58th Canadian Infantry Battalion was perpetuated by the Royal Regiment of Canada.
