Scope and content
Series consists of the historical records of Canadian Pioneer Battalions, which were sent periodically to the Canadian Record Office and the Canadian War Records Office for safekeeping. The records are arranged by subject within each unit. Canadian Pioneer Battalions worked in conjunction with the Engineers and were continually in the Forward Area, the work in the back area being left to Labour Units and Entrenching Battalions. The work undertaken by Pioneer Battalions was varied and included consolidating positions captured by the infantry, tunnelling, mining, wiring, railroad work, deep dugout work and laying out, and building and keeping trenches in repair.
