Scope and content

Series consists of historical records from Canadian Forestry Corps (CFC) in France, which were sent periodically to the Canadian Record Office and the Canadian War Records Office for safekeeping. The records are arranged by subject within each unit. The series includes historical files from the CFC Headquarters in France (Vols. 4499- 4501), as well as the Headquarters of the Central Group (Vols. 4499, 4502-4515), the Bordeaux Group (Vols. 4499, 4519- 4520) and the Jura Group (Vols. 4499, 4515-4518, 4521). Volume 4499 contains records from districts and companies of the CFC in France, including districts numbered 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 12; companies numbered 1, 2, 6, 14, 15, 19-60, 69-80, 120, 124, 125; and the Independent Forestry Company, M.D. 10. Also included in this series are records from the Corps Hospital at La Joux, which came under the Headquarters, Jura Group (Vol. 4521). RG9M 78903-1 includes plans of the different forest regions of France, and woodworking tools and machines.

Biography / Administrative history

Authorised in October 1916 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Alexander McDougall, the CFC was composed of companies, each of which came under one of the six district headquarters in Great Britain or one of the eight district headquarters in France. Companies in France were numbered below 100. The CFC in France came under the British Expeditionary Force, Director of Works until March 1917 when a Directorate of Forestry was created. Districts in France were organised into Central, Bordeaux, and Jura Groups. The Corps headquarters was established at Paris-Plage, near Boulogne.

Most CFC Companies were engaged in general forestry operations - including the making of pit props, railway sleepers, saw logs and axe handles - but some cleared, drained, levelled and graded sites for aerodromes, both in England and in France.
