The Law Branch of the Department of Justice was established in 1929. By 1952 the it had absorbed the functions of the Remissions Branch, including the acquisition of court transcripts of capital case trials and the consideration of applications for clemency. Law Branch became the Legal Branch in 1955 and consisted of six sections: Advisory, Civil Litigation, Civil Law, Criminal Law, Departmental Service and Legislation Section. The responsibility for the disposition of capital cases shifted from the Justice Department to the Solicitor General in 1966 when that department was established.
