Law Branch became the Legal Branch in 1955 and consisted of six sections: Advisory, Civil Litigation, Civil Law, Criminal Law, Departmental Service and Legislation Section. The responsibility for the disposition of capital cases shifted from the Justice Department to the Solicitor General in 1966 when that department was established.
