Sub-series consists of copies of correspondence, statistics, meeting notes, requests for information etc from files maintained by Robert Hamilton Coats and Sedley Anthony Cudmore during their respective tenure's as Dominion Statistician. Some files were started during Coats' tenure and finished by Cudmore. Topics include items sent to Senators and Members of Parliament, bureau re-organization and staffing, the Canada Year Book for various years, war economies, etc.

Biography / Administrative history

In 1902, Robert Hamilton Coats became the associate editor of the Department of Labour's Labour Gazette, where he was responsible for the publication of information relating to labour market conditions, and related subjects, in Canada. He was appointed Chief Statistician, Department of Labour in 1912, and on 19 June 1915, Coats was named Dominion Statistician and Controller of the Census in the Department of Trade and Commerce. When the Dominion Bureau of Statistics was created in 1918, Coats became the Dominion Statistician of the new organization. Coats retired from this position on 25 January 1942. In recognition of his years of public service, he was designated `Dominion Statistician Emeritus', a position which took effect 6 months after his retirement. Sedley Anthony Cudmore was appointed Chief, Education and General Statistics Division in 1919. In 1935, he seconded to Palestine to head the new bureau of statistics established in that country. He returned to the Dominion Bureau of Statistics in 1938, where he served as Assistant Dominion Statistician. Upon RH Coats' retirement in 1942, Cudmore was appointed Dominion Statistician. He served in this role until his sudden death in October, 1945.
