Biography / Administrative history

From 1942 to 1944, Walter Elliott Duffett served with the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, before moving to the Bank of Canada, where he served as a member of the research staff. Duffett moved again in 1954, when he became director of the Economics and Research Branch at the Department of Labour. On 1 January 1957, Duffett took office as Dominion Statistician at the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. Before his retirement on 30 June 1972, Duffett saw the passage of new enabling legislation for the department, and a change of name to Statistics Canada, and with his post becoming 'Chief Statistician'.
