Additional information
The accession consists of documentation on the artist George Heriot and on Heriot family history and largely comprises records collected by the Charleston branch of the Heriot family. Included are two original autograph letters signed, 1834 and 1838, from George Heriot to his brother Roger in Charleston, South Carolina, giving family news, discussing the cholera epidemic and referring to sending drawings; one letter is accompanied by an unattributed handwritten transcript. There is an original autograph letter signed, 1883, from [John Charles] Heriot, George's [grand-nephew], to John Heriot of Charleston, referring to family history and genealogy, also with an unattributed handwritten transcript; and an undated [post-1865] original handwritten letter from "Cousin Julia" in Ohio to an unnamed recipient, discussing family matters and family history and referring to George Heriot art works. Other material in the donation includes two unattributed typed transcripts (one a photocopy) of letters 1756 and 1765 from John Heriot, Haddington, Scotland, to his cousin Robert Heriot in Charleston, one introducing George Heriot; a photocopy of a George Heriot letter 1807 to William Hands, on post office matters; and two letters to George Finley, 1975 and 1983, about George Heriot and his family.
