Biography / Administrative history

The Research and Statistics Division (Welfare) was responsible for collecting information and statistics likely to be of use to departmental staff responsible for the various welfare programmes administered by the department. A separate component in the same division was responsible for information and statistics on health topics. The name was changed in 1955 from Research Division and in 1966 it became known as the Research and Statistics Directorate. In 1977 the Division was dissolved in favour of a system wherein each programme area began to do its own research and statistics work.
