Biography / Administrative history
The Federal/Provincial/Territorial Review on Liability and Compensation Issues in Health Care was created in September 1987 to provide advice to the Deputy Ministers of Health on a variety of issues relating to health care liability and compensation. Their mandate was trifold: to examine and report on issues related to liability and compensation associated with health care delivery provided by professionals, voluntary organizations, and the Canadian Blood Supply system; to advise on possible legal reforms designed to ameliorate the cost of liability claims on the Canadian public health care system, and to advise on the possibility of alternative mechanisms to litigation for persons who have become disabled following injury during the provision of health care. Costs of the Review, which included a number of consultation meetings across the country and commissioned research studies, were borne equally by the provincial and federal governments.
