Biography / Administrative history
On 11 February 1972, the Canadian government announced a program of federal aid to assist the Canadian publishing industry in setting up marketing agencies to export books to the united states, France, and the United Kingdom. To develop the new facilities and systems, and to implement and administer the new program, the Association for the Export of Canadian books (AECB) was chartered under the Companies act of Canada as a non-profit, no-share capital Corporation. Financial sponsorship for the AECB was provided by the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce through the Cultural Industries Division, Textiles and Consumer Products Branch. To fulfill the mandate outlined in its charter, the AECB formed three separate consortia: Books Canada Inc. (U.S.), Livres du Canada S.A. (France), Books Canada Ltd. (U.K.). collectively known as Books Canada, the program established an expanded foreign market for Canadian books through the commercial operation of book centres and representation at international book fairs. Books Canada ceased fulfilment activities on 31 may 1977 and closed shortly thereafter, on 14 October 1977.
