Scope and content
The photographic series consists of an album of chronologically-arranged photographs possibly created and certainly collected by Alice E. Isaacson during the period 1916-1919 when she was a Nursing Sister with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in France. The photographs include numerous aspects of her activities in France and elsewhere, both while on active duty and when on leave. The photographs document military funerals; cemeteries; No. 2 and No. 6 Canadian General Hospitals showing the staff, facilities and some of the patients; parades; and include a wide variety of photographs taken or acquired during her leaves during and after the war. She visited parts of England, Ireland, France (including battlefield areas, after the war), Belgium, Italy and Spain. During her travels she acquired numerous photographs of artwork, sculpture and architecture in Paris, Troyes, Florence, Rome and Venice. The photographs are from many sources, including numerous snapshots of varying sizes and quality as well as the work of professional photographers. The majority of the photographs have some sort of identification, usually in Alice Isaacson's hand.
