Scope and content
Collection photographically documents the following subjects: the Arctic resupply voyage of M.V. Rupertsland, 1958; views of Montréal, Québec City, Roberval, Churchill, 1958; landscapes and Inuit daily life in and around Cape Dorset, Chesterfield, Frobisher Bay, Igloolik, Kangiak, Lake Harbour, Pangnirtung, Rankin Inlet, and Sugluk, Northwest Territories; activities of Inuit artists associated with the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative, Cape Dorset. Photographs are by Charles Gimpel, Bryan Pearson, and Lorne Smith. The collection includes documentation on subsequent trips to the Canadian Arctic up to 1969. The following individuals are documented: Adamie, Betty Adams, Kenojuak Ashevak, Pitseolak Ashoona, Father Danielo, Eeqeevudluk, Charles Gimpel, Nelson Graburn, Bill Hall, Monica Hember, Ellie Houston, James Houston, Oshuitok Ipeelee, Kananginak, Bryan Pearson, Peter Pitseolak, Lucy Quinnuayuak, Pat Ryan, Terry Ryan, Pauta Saila, Joanasie Salomonie, Doug Tate, Shorty Tingley, Father Trinel, Constable R.D. Van Norman, Father Verspeeck. Textual documents include clippings, notebooks used by Gimpel while photographing, original captions, correspondence and exhibition-related material. Accession file holds photocopies of inscribed negative sleeves and envelopes, as well as copies of articles on Gimpel's work.
