Scope and content

Fonds consists of photographic depictions of: key map of the Parliament Buildings; construction of Parliament Buildings, Ottawa, Ontario depicting the following views: west block; west block from Wellington Street; east block; north end of east block; east block, Governor General's entrance; east block from Elgin Street; centre block, rear view; centre block, front view; rear and east view; front entrance near main tower; side view of main tower; centre block; library and centre block; towers of the Parliamnet Buildings, north-east view from roof of west block; Parliamenet Buildings from near by the Supreme Court and entrance of Lover's Walk; Langevin Block. Other photographs include: Government House, Ottawa, Ontario; Chaudière District from Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Ontario; views in and about Quebec, including churches, country houses, landscapes, mills, ships, and machinery. Photographs by Samuel McLaughlin. Also included in this fonds are views of Quebec, Quebec and environs by Samuel McLaughlin and published as "The Photographic Portfolio"; photo album entitled "Saguenay Photographs of Public Works" prepared by Samuel McLaughlin, Chief Government Photographers, at Public Works Canada. Topics include: public works, wharves, slides, booms, dams, fish breeding works on the Saguenay River area, Anse St. Jean, St. Alphonse, Chicoutimi, Lac St. Jean, Roberval, and Tadoussac. As well, there are portraits of Samuel McLaughlin by: Cross Photo, Salem, Mass.; Coules, Los Angeles, California; and by an unknowm photographer; portraits of Samuel McLaughlin and of his sons George McLaughlin and William Ashley McLaughlin by: Mitchell, Los Angeles; Partridge, Boston, Mass; and by unknown photographers. Fonds also consists of one pen and ink drawing of Samuel McLaughlin by an unknown artist.

Samuel McLaughlin (1826-1914), photographer. Born 1826 Ireland. Flourished Quebec, Quebec ; Ottawa, Ont., 1861-1893 ; Los Angeles, Calif., 1893-1914. Began as a watchmaker and book and periodical agent. First to publish an album of Canadian photo prints. Appointed "photographist" for the commissioner of Public Works, 1861. Technical and visual mastery evident in photos of new Parliament Buildings
