Additional information
Records in this accession consist of case files opened at immigration headquarters on Chinese immigrants. They consist of both routine ministerial inquiries (amounting to a page or two of correspondence between officials) to more complex cases involving deportations and appeals. These latter cases contain copies of application and admission records, supporting documentation detailing the personal history of the individual as well as correspondence between immigration officials, interested parties, non-governmental organizations and law enforcement agencies. Material from the Immigration Appeal Board or the Federal Court of Canada is also included in these files. They are therefore similar to other personal immigration case files. They were, however, classified in a special series due to the ethnic origins of the applicants. It appears from this group of case files that other Asian immigrants, such as those of Vietnamese origin, were sometimes included in the CH series. Some files contain Chinese family trees which were compiled by immigration officials for certain Chinese families who were under investigation for possible involvement in irregular or illegal immigration schemes.
