The fonds consists of records concerning Ben Mink's career as a performer, recording artist, composer, and producer, including: files pertaining to musical groups in which Mink performed and toured (including Murray McLauchlan and the Silver Tractors, FM, CANO, and k.d. lang); files concerning recording, film, and television projects involving Mink as a performer, composer, or producer (including projects by k.d. lang, the Barenaked Ladies, and Marie-Lynn Hammond); compositions by Mink or by others; personal and professional correspondence; promotional material, such as programmes, press kits, buttons, and a metal object; clippings and periodicals with references to Mink or to projects involving him; financial records concerning Mink and his company, Zavion Enterprises Inc.; scrapbooks; photographs of Mink and others (including: Murray McLauchlan, k.d. lang, and their groups; the groups Stringband, FM, Rush, and Prairie Oyster; Stompin' Tom Connors, Madonna, Deborah Harry, Bruce Springsteen, and Sting); painting by Gus [Van Sant] with an inscription to Mink; sound recordings (some on diskettes) and video recordings, predominantly of performances by Mink and other musicians.

Biography / Administrative history
Composer and multi-instrumentalist born in the United States of America, Ben Mink moved to Toronto as a child. He became active in that city's popular music scene in the late 1960s, performing with the Blazing Zulus and with the rock/country group Mary Lou Horner, which became the house band at the Rock Pile. Mink toured and recorded in the 1970s and early 1980s with folk and rock groups such as Stringband, Murray McLauchlan and the Silver Tractors, FM, and CANO, and also performed at folk festivals, on television, and at other venues. Performing on guitar, mandolin, and violin (including electric instruments), Mink was influenced by Eastern European and Jewish folk music, a reflection of his parents' origins in Poland. In 1980 he released an album, Foreign Exchange, under his own name, although most of his recorded performances have been on recordings by other musicians. In 1985 he joined the band of country artist k.d. lang, and since then has collaborated as a performer, composer, and producer with lang on several tours, recordings, and television appearances. In addition to extensive film, television, and commercial work, Mink has also produced and/or performed on recordings by numerous other artists, a diverse group which includes the Barenaked Ladies, Meryn Cadell, Marie-Lynn Hammond, Dan Hill, Mendelson Joe, Prairie Oyster, Raffi, Rush, Jane Siberry, Sylvia Tyson, and Valdy. He is the recipient of numerous Canadian and international music industry awards.
