Scope and content

The series consists of files relating to Shoyama's life in Victoria, following his move there in 1980 after his departure from the federal civil service. Documents includes articles, notes, newspapers clippings, incoming correspondence, copies of outgoing correspondence, news releases, interviews, drafts of a proposed history and a biography, speeches and speech notes, lecture notes, briefs, reports, memoranda, honorary doctorates and photographs. The series contains material relating to the campaign for redress fought by the Japanese Canadian community in early 1980s, information on Shoyama's past experiences and accomplishments, and documents related to his involvement in organizations such as the Public Policy Forum. The files contain letters from Shoyama to André Juneau, correspondence from longtime friends and colleagues such as novelist Joy Kogawa and politician Allan Blakeney, and correspondence from Frank Moritsugu, Kinu Okada, Masahiro Shoyama, and Narumi Tanaka. The files include letters of condolence following the death of Shoyama's daughter. There are also letters of condolence following the death of Thomas Shoyama. Also included are a draft interview on the Tommy Douglas/C.C.F. years and files concerning Ann Sunahara's proposed biography of Shoyama.
