Sir John Sparrow Thompson was Canada's fifth Prime Minister, holding office from December 5, 1892 until December 12, 1894. He was a well respected lawyer, judge and politician. After a brief period as Premier of Nova Scotia he was appointed a judge to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. Later Thompson was Minister of Justice and Attorney General under Sir John A. Macdonald. He was knighted in 1888. When Macdonald died, Sir John Caldwell Abbott became Prime Minister, and after his retirement, Thompson replaced him. He travelled to England in 1894 to be sworn in as a member of the Queen's Imperial Privy Council. He died at the luncheon following the ceremony.
Lavish memorial services were held both in England and Canada where thousands of mourners paid tribute. This portrait miniature by de Bock is a posthumous work and is dated the year after his death.
