Scope and content
A lithograph by Roper which was published in 1883 in "Muskoka: Picturesque Playground of Canada" shows a similar scene as the painting and it is identified as "Hawk's Nest Rock near Port Cockburn, Lake Joseph".

Inscription: in pencil under oil, recto l.l.: Hawk's Nest / Lake Joseph / Muskoka / Sep. 22 1883; printed label in black ink, verso c.: Hawk's Nest Rock, Lake Rosseau, / Muskoka. / These two views are on either side of the Lake, / near its head. The Island seen in No. 7, is called / Round Island; such a one was frequently purchased / a few years ago for 1 dollar 75 cents (7 shillings) / from the crown, but few, if any, are now to be / bought thus.
