Scope and content

The silhouette is full length to the left showing a young man holding a hat and cane and dog at his feet. It was the Frontispiece from the Appendix au Journal d'un Fils de la Liberté (MG 24, B2, vol. 27).

Biography / Administrative history

Louis-Joseph-Amédée Papineau was the eldest son of the patriote Louis-Joseph Papineau. Louis-Joseph-Amédée was a fervent supporter of the French-Canadian cause in Lower Canada, and was a founding member of the Fils de la Liberté, an association of young patriote reformists. The silhouette of a young man holding a hat and cane with a dog at his feet was done by Auguste Edouart at the spa town of Saratoga Springs in New York. The silhouette was used as the Frontispiece for the Appendix of his "Journal d'un Fils de la Liberté réfugié aux Etats-Unis par suite de L'Insurrection Canadienne en 1837".
