Inscription: in pencil, verso: Hamilton [underlined] from the bush ["bush" underlined] corner of Burlington Beach near Brant House -/ the houses in Hamilton are white or light when black marks are = then are a few/ darker marks. lights are evidently roofs = ["roofs" underlined] Mountain has more lt shade/ on it more prup = The Trees are light [crossed out with two lines in pencil] right as to drawing [?] & position of/ lt & shade, but all want to be richer, deeper, green - and the flat... has very high lt. Lemon Y. on it, the lts. of sky are/ reflected to E. in water - Rushes & reeds are rt. as to color & motive./ In foregd. dead tall mulleins - plenty of Both= This for sketch as it is/ but when water is dead calm, reflect all [underlined] properly - Evening sky gives/ very pretty effect heighest lt. (after sun is set) is on dist./ water then land is purple Shad. behind & misty, then/ trees come in very rich with lt. W.R. & the sky repeats/ itself well ["well" underlined]= then are flocking bits all over water only/ visible when it is calm./ Sep. 1883
