John Webber was the official artist for James Cook's Third Voyage (1776-1780) from the South Seas to the West Coast of North America. This image appears in the book of plates, companion to the second edition of the Journal of Captain Cook and James King, A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean...three volumes (I and II by Cook, III by King), published in 1785 by William Strahan in New Street, Shoe Lane and Thomas Cadell in the Strand, London, England. Printed by H. Hughes. This image is plate number 33.
On the outside of the house stand two wooden images...These were said to be representations of goddesses. On the head of one of them is a carved helmet...and on that of the other, a cylindrical cap...and both of them have peices of cloth, tied about the loins...Before the two images, is an oblong space, inclosed by a low edging of stone, and covered with shreds of cloth. This...was the grave of the seven Chiefs (Volume II of III, p.200).
