Scope and content
He arrived in Calgary, Alberta, with $3.00 in his pocket, alone, and tired after a long and tedious journey across the continent from Halifax. Lacking money for his first night's lodging, he was befriended by a total stranger, who supplied him with free board and lodging for three days and found him his first job. Today, (1961), Ben Hulkenberg is the proprietor of a thriving bakery business which he opened in April 1960 under the name of Stewart's Bakery. He is a Canadian citizen married to a former Dutch girl from Leeuwarden whom he met in Calgary, father of two Canadian-born children, Joann Mary, 4, and James Bernard, 1, and the owner of his own home at 31 Winchester Crescent, Calgary. All this was possible because Ben Hulkenberg was skilled in his baker's trade and was willing to work hard and to persevere in his determination to get ahead. In Naarden he had been employed with Haagen's confectionary and candy factory for twelve years and had advanced to foreman, with good pay. He came to Canada because he could see little hope of ever owning his own business in Holland. Before starting his own business in Canada, he worked as a ranch hand, as a labourer with a construction gang, and finally asa baker with a large chain store. Today, with one business already thriving, he is planning to start a candy factory in Calgary. His advice to intending immigrants? Learn English, be prepared to work hard, and don't expect gold in the streets. There are many opportunities available and it is up to the immigrant to make the best of them.
