Title
Inuit man applying "mud" to the bare shoeing of his sled. According to Mrs. Marsh, the mud was made from a soil material composed mainly of decomposed mosses and lichens, mixed with water. It was moulded onto the runners, left to freeze, planed smooth, then coated with a thick layer of ice. This slick surface allowed the sled to run easily over snow and ice. Re-icing occurred at regular intervals.
