Additional information

These case files were created by the Admission Division of the Immigration Branch. Although some of the documents in these files date back to the 1920s, the majority of the files were created during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. This material is comprised of case files containing information on individuals who were issued deportation notices after they were found guilty of violating section 19 of the Immigration Act. This section of the Act stipulates that any individuals who possess severe health or mental problems, are unable to support themselves, or have committed a crime that may be punishable under an Act of Parliament, shall not be granted admission to Canada. In 1961, this Division issued 1,965 deportation orders. These cases are frequently appealed and are subsequently sent to the Immigration Appeal Board which provides a judgement either for or against the decision.

This material is in the form of case files which contain correspondence, internal memorandum from the Departments of Mines and Resources, and Citizenship and Immigration, telegrams, warrants of arrest, deportation orders, and reports provided by the R.C.M.P. or local police. Some of the files also contain information from the Immigration Appeal Board hearing which include: notices of appeal, appeal reviews, exhibits, and the Immigration Appeal Board decisions.
