Additional information
The majority of case files in this accession are in the form of case files from the Headquarter (HQ 4) Series. These case files contain information on individuals who were issued deportation notices after they were found guilty of violating Section 19 of the Immigration Act. This section of the Act stipulates that any individuals who possess severe health or mental problems, are unable to support themselves, or have committed a crime that may be punishable under an Act of Parliament, shall not be granted admission to Canada. These cases are frequently appealed and are subsequently sent to the Immigration and Refugee Board, who provide a judgement either for or against the decision.
The files contain documentation such as correspondence, internal memoranda, minutes of inquiries, detainee expense sheets, affidavits, notice of appeals, reasons for judgement, telegrams, warrants of arrest, deportation orders, and reports provided by the RCMP or local police. If the case was appealed after a decision was reached by the Immigration Appeal Board, the file would contain Federal Court and/or Supreme Court decisions.
The last two boxes contain case files that were from the Transportation Loan (TL) and Assisted Passage (AP) categories. Like the Headquarter files, the AP and TL files in this accession also document cases of individuals who were issued deportation notices. Individuals who participated in these two programs received funding from the Department, in the form of a loan, for their transportation expenses.
